In light of the overwhelming evidence that tabacco smoking is bad for you, many individuals are starting to take an interest in vaping. Even Public Health England have recently published a report stating that vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking cigarettes or tabacco, so it's not wonder more and more smokers are ditching their cigarettes for vape kits. However, getting into the work of vaping can be incredibly daunting for a beginner. As the market booms, more and more devices are going on sale along with various mods and flavours of e-juice, and it can be incredibly difficult to keep up. Those new to the world of vaping will often start with a vape kit. It's a great place to start, and most kits will have everything you need (except the juice) to get started right out of the box - but how do you get started?
Getting started with your vape kit
A vape kit is the ideal way to start vaping, and many regular vapers still purchase different kits as they get more curiours about the various facets of vaping. In 2017, newcomers really are spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing a starter kit, but most will contain the types of compenets (albeit with different specifications). The main components of your vape kit will be the tank, battery (part of the 'mod') and coil. These 3 elements and they way they work together will determine the type of vaping experience you'll have, and it's a great way to experiment and figure out what kind of vaper you're going to be.
Powering your vape kit
The battery is perhaps one of the most underappreciated components. It can have a huge impact on your vaping experience but even vaping veterans sometimes overlook the difference the right battery can make. Your vape kit will come with a battery, but different kits may have different volatages and types of battery, so it's worth considering. A battery with high capacity typically can’t have a high current aswell, so there’s a lot of give and take. High voltage, for example, will make for bigger clouds as more current is sent through the coil. It's the perfect choice for big, dense cloud production and sub-ohm vapers prefer it. Temperature also factors in; higher temperatures can result in short life for your battery, so even if you're not sure what kind of vaping you want to do, it's a good idea to do some preliminary research before you get started so you know what's possible with your vaping kit of choice.
Every vape kit will come with a coil
The coil - or atomizer - is an essential component. The coil wraps around the wick of your vaping device, heating it up when its wet to turn your juice into vapour. There are various different types of coil on the market all with different specifications. One of the main specs on a coil you'll see is its 'ohm' rating.
Every atomizer coil will have an ohm spec. If you remember anything from studying physics at school, you'll that an 'ohm' is a measure of resistance - the coil wire will have an electrical resistance which determines how much vapour and flavour you get from a puff. Sub-ohm vaping uses a coil with less than 1 ohm resistance to produce bigger vape clouds and more intense flavour hits.
Most vape coils do need to be replaced when the flavour of your e-juice starts to taste off or lack flavour, but thanks to the convenient setup of most atomizers this is fairly easy and straightforward. Many kits even come with a replacement coil so you'll be good to go for a while. No vape kit comes without a tank
Your vape tank is invaluable. Keep it clean and look after it, and you'll have a long and happy vaping career. Vape tanks vary in shape and size, but looking after them is largely the same. If you vape regularly be sure to clean your vape tank every 2 or 3 days with warm water or an ultrasonic cleaner. The latter is not essential but could make your life easier. If your vape tank isn't kept clean, e-juice will likely build up over type and cause congestion and a bad taste. If you switch up your flavours regularly you'll run the risk of flavour 'ghosting' too - so always remember clean your vape tank.
