Vape batteries: How to play it safe

There a lots of do's and don'ts when it comes to using vape batteries, so much so that it can often be a bit overwhelming for newcomers to wrap their heads around. Depending on what kind of vaper you are, your kit will carry a lot of clout in terms of battery power, so it's a good idea to read up on the risks and benefits of different vape batteries before you invest. In many ways, vape batteries are at the very heart of your vaping experience, so they're a good thing to get right.

How vape batteries shape your vape

It's easy to get lost thinking about vape coils, wicks and tanks, but the vape batteries you choose can actually have a more profound impact on your vape than you realise. Vape batteries can affect performance through the voltage they provide, with certain voltages being able to produce bigger clouds - if that's your thing. Some vapers may be fine with lower voltages but it's always nice to have the option, particularly if you'd like to experiment. Vape batteries, like any other battery, also kick out a lot heat which needs to be moderated and managed in the right way. The higher the temperature, the shorter the lifespan of the battery.

Staying safe with vape batteries

If you're the kind of vaper who likes to draw a big current to produce huge plumes of vapor, then you're probably already a battery expert simply through trial and error. However, even the most seasoned vapers can still make bad calls when it comes to battery safety. One of the styles of vaping most at risk from poor battery use is sub-ohm vaping, which typically draws a huge current to produce awesome clouds. If you have a vape kit with an integrated battery, chances are you have nothing to worry about, but if you use any kind of mod then you need to pay more attention to how you 'keep' your battery. The reason this is such a concern is because experienced vapers tend to carry batteries around with them loosely so they can swap them in when needed. This is very useful on holiday and long trips where charge points may be hard to come by.

If you do opt to carry spare vape batteries with you, do so with safey in mind. Don't carry them loosely in bags or pockets and keep them away from coins, keys and other things that could potentially damage them. If your battery does take a knock, it could start leaking which could cause all sorts of problems.

Good battery habits

Regardless of how you vape, there are things we can all do to get the most out of our batteries and ensure our safety. One example that many newcomers overlook is simply powering off the device. Even the most simple vape pens have a feature that lets you 'power down' the system by holding a button or doing a '5-click' motion. This is doubly important when carrying you vape kit around with you in a bag or pocket - accidently pressing the button can result in the device heating up over time and causing an accident. Another good piece of advice is to use the cable that came with your charger. We're living in an age where cables are pretty much interchangeable, but your vape charger will have things like overcharge, over-voltage, short circuit reverse polarity protection which could prevent an incident from occuring!
